Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is rejoining the city's district energy system after more than 30 years of maintaining its own steam generator to heat the buildings at 500 and 600 E. Lafayette.
"We are extremely pleased to welcome Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and its landmark headquarters buildings to the steam system," said Vic Koppang, president of Detroit Thermal. "The careful analysis that preceded this decision is a clear indication that other buildings that have left the system over time should consider the benefits of Detroit Thermal steam when investigating energy choices."

wayne county signs three year extension

Wayne County has signed a new three year contract to cover eight different county buildings. The contract calls for the buildings to use a total of 170,000 M-pounds of steam per year. By staying on the system, the county avoided the heavy capital costs of installing boilers and creating a distribution infastructure and can take advantage of Detroit Thermal's competitive operating costs.

Victor Koppang has been promoted to President of Detroit Thermal, LLC effective immediately.
Since joining Detroit Thermal in 2008 as General Manager, Koppang has brought new life to the district energy company with the recent announcement of nearly $100 million in new business, including a ten year contract with the Detroit Thermal Medical Center in February.

Detroit Thermal's newest addition to the steam system will be Detroit Medical Center's Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, better known as RIM.
The project start date will be July 24, 2009. The entire job should take one month, putting the project completion date at August 24, 2009.
We are delighted to add RIM to our customer base and pledge safe, reliable and worry-free service.

$22 million capital improvement program, Detroit Thermal recently upgraded
the controls on boilers Number 1 and 2. They are now equipped with electronic
computerized burner management control systems that allow an operator
in the control room to monitor and change many aspects of the steam generation
